Geography of a Recession: The New York Times offers an interactive map showing unemployment across the United States by county (above,) metropolitan area, those areas with housing bubbles, rural areas, and manufacturing centers. The map was based on a nationwide average unemployment rate of 7.1 percent. Most severe job losses are in housing boom and manufacturing areas, and those with previously high unemployment rates.
